High school students across the Prut will once again study the subject “History of Romania”, in a reconfigured format, starting this school year, according to the Romanian Minister of Education, Daniel David, reports IPN.

The reform of 1999-2000 eliminated “The History of Romania” as a distinct subject from pre-university education. It was replaced with the subject “History”, which included both themes from national history and from world history.

According to Mediafax, this change generated numerous controversies in society, especially around the idea that the elimination of the “history of Romanians” as a matter of its own would dilute the sense of belonging and national identity.

Minister Daniel David stated that the new teaching formula for “The History of Romania” aims to strengthen the components of culture and national identity.

“The study of history should not be questioned — history in general — however, history takes place in space and time, and our space and time refer to Romanians,” stated the president of the Romanian Academy, Ioan-Aurel Pop.
