The United Nations Security Council convened after Poland intercepted over 19 Russian drones with NATO backing, marking the first time a member of the alliance fired shots during Russia’s war in Ukraine. Poland’s Secretary of State Marcin Bosacki categorically rejected suggestions it was a mistake, presenting drone debris with Russian lettering and declaring, “Poland will not be intimidated.” Poland called on allies not to “pretend nothing happened,” a direct rebuke of President Trump’s more cautious response. Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia denied the incursion was intentional, arguing the drones’ range made it “physically impossible” to reach Poland and insisting no targets were marked in Polish territory. Despite Moscow’s overtures for talks, Poland and Western allies maintained the incident was a deliberate violation, and the US assured Poland of unwavering NATO support, joining 43 countries in condemning the airspace breach and urging Russia to end its provocations in Ukraine.
