The Norfolk-based USS Gerald R. Ford arrived in Oslo, Norway, Friday during its deployment, following Arctic training with allied navies.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk-based aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford arrived in Oslo, Norway, on Friday for a scheduled port visit during its current deployment.

The Ford operated in the North and Norwegian Seas before its arrival, with Norfolk destroyers USS Mahan and USS Bainbridge training alongside the Norwegian, German and French navies in the Arctic Circle.

“When the USS Gerald R. Ford entered Oslo Fjord in 2023, it was the first U.S. aircraft carrier to do so in 65 years,” said Eric Myer, Charge d’Affairs, ad interim. “These visits are not merely symbolic. The presence of this carrier strike group in Norwegian waters training with Allied forces exemplifies our commitment to shared security.”

While in port, sailors are touring the city, experiencing Norwegian traditions, and helping with a local veteran’s run.

Capt. Dave Skarosi, the Ford’s commanding officer, said returning to Oslo is significant for the crew. “Our ship visited Oslo during its maiden deployment in 2023, and we are privileged to return,” he said.

The Gerald R. Ford is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group Twelve, which is operating in support of U.S. 6th Fleet in Europe.
