SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Flu season is approaching, which means it’s time to get your annual flu shot. While the virus spreads year-round, the CDC says usually, flu activity peaks between December and February.

This is why the organization recommends getting a new vaccine every year.

Health professionals recommend you get your shot sooner, rather than later.

“Prevention is key in not getting the flu,” explained Suzanne Cosby, Director of nursing at SouthCoast Health.

The flu can come in many forms, from mild to severe infections. The best way to prevent severe illness, is by getting your flu shot.

“In the event you do get the flu, if you have the flu shot, then your signs and symptoms may not be as bad,” Cosby said.

According to the CDC, everyone 6 months and older in the United States, with rare exception, should get their flu shot every year.

On Saturday, SouthCoast Health hosted a vaccine clinic to kick off flu season and ensure that patients had easy access to the shot.

“We’re promoting it for prevention to help the community so that there’s not a spread,” Cosby said.

The healthcare professional has advice for anyone who’s fear of needles is interfering with getting their flu shot.

“We have wonderful nursing staff that will be able to take care of you and ensure that it’s done safely and properly and that you’re comfortable as you possibly can be. Unfortunately, it is a shot, but it is for a good cause,” Cosby said.

After getting the vaccine, there may be soreness at the site, and mild discomfort, but the end result means protection from the flu illness.
