The security situation in Yemen has reached a critical crossroad, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, stressed on Monday.

“Greece condemns in the strongest possible terms the Houthi invasion into the premises of the World Food Program and UNICEF in Sana’a, which led to the forcible detention of at least twenty-one UN personnel,” she told the assembly and called for the “immediate and unconditional release of all arbitrarily detained personnel.”

Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN also referred to maritime security, condemning the Houthi attacks on the commercial vessels Magic Seas and Eternity C. Balta said that these attacks “pose a severe threat to freedom of navigation,” while recalling that four crew members were killed and eleven remain hostages.

Greece, she said, continues to contribute decisively to the EU operation Aspides in the Red Sea.
