Skydio, a San Mateo-based tech company, is hosting “Ascend 2025” at Seascape Beach Resort in Aptos. It’s a three-day immersive showcase with industry experts, live demos, and product reveals focusing on how drones can be used by public safety agencies. While Wednesday and Thursday are exclusive events, Tuesday was open to everyone. “We have the local Aptos, Seascape community coming out to see the technology up close and personal, to get their hands on it, be able to ask questions,” said Mira Marquez with Skydio. The company’s autonomous drones can act as a first responder, being able to get eyes on a scene. “The beauty of drones as a first responder, DFR, is that these tools can be used to go into places where it could be dangerous for a human,” said Marquez. The hope of the event is that California first responders can get a better understanding of how they can utilize this kind of technology in their operations. Marquez said already San Mateo police are having success with the drones. For the public in attendance on Tuesday, it was quite a memorable morning. They got to hear directly from the people behind the tech and learned how to pilot a Skydio drone through flight simulations. “Learning the keys, and going forward and backwards, and how to land,” said Aptos resident Charlene Gerrish. “It was really fun,” said young Aptos resident Vivian Moore. “You could feel how you like actually drive a drone.”Skydio said Wednesday they will unveil their latest products.
