Not a particularly great title, the article is about WHEN the second language is taught rather than SHOULD. Do you expose kids before 11 or after. So the government wants to introduce a bill to make it so that everyone has to teach it starting at primary level.

The sooner the better. My 8 years old son picking up French like a sponge while my 14 yo one takes it a bit slower.

When will these guys realize that English is the lingua franca?

I’m an immigrant here, I understand and I think it’s a noble cause to “force” this, however, it’s a bit frustrating encouraging my kid to learn a fourth language… which honestly it’s kind of useless anyway… French and German will become less and less valuable in the coming years.

I would but the French I learned was useless, words that I never use, it didn’t make sense and I learned it in the third grade so it was early,

As usual a lot symbolism and less thought through ideas. If so few people can speak proper French after 10 years of learning it at school, that means the quality of teaching is horrible (which it is in my experience) and/or the pupils never get to use it outside of the classroom. So maybe time to start working on that.
Btw, this is a global issue with languages. You are forced to memorise thousands of pages of words at school and ace the exams, but are unable to speak properly.

We should learn English early and not french or Italian. Later in school we should offer French and Italian as a 3rd language.

Just get rid of French entirely. Having more than 1 official language is a waste anyway and Switzerland is more known for speaking German anyway.
Also French is one of the worst sounding languages anyway, not to mention how stupid some of rules about pronunciation are and the mess that is counting beyond 66 or what number it was after which it gets fucked.

I am sorry, but you don’t need French at all. This Baume-Schneider is for the foxes.

10000%, I was taught way too late to speak German and Italian, therefore my Italian is gone as I had to prioritize English, and my German is on life support…
Even though you don’t use them, learning many languages at a young age is still great for brain development anyway!
