Serbia warns of diplomatic offensive against Kosovo at the UN

Official Belgrade has warned of a diplomatic offensive against Kosovo on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which runs from September 23 to 29. Neither the Kosovo government nor the presidency have indicated what actions they will take in response to Serbia’s campaign.
President Vjosa Osmani is currently in the US and recently posted about several meetings she held with the Albanian community. She also shared on social media that she met with the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
“I emphasized the importance of cooperation between Kosovo and the Arab League, as well as the need for support in the process of recognizing Kosovo by the member states of this organization that have not yet taken this step,” Osmani wrote on Facebook.
Serbian officials have talked about the possibility of taking advantage of what they have referred to as “Pristina’s diplomatic failures” to strengthen its position, mainly in relations with the US, but also with Western partners. Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric has said that they are preparing for a change in the attitude of part of the international community towards Kosovo.
“Interestingly connecting with key factors in the international community, we have reached the point where those countries that strongly supported the so-called independence of Kosovo are now speaking out loud and clear against what the Kurti regime is doing,” Djuric was quoted as saying.
But Djuric, as “Danas” reports, has not indicated what this specifically means, “considering that key factors, no matter how much they speak in favor of Belgrade, have not announced any drastic turn against Pristina.”
This approach by Belgrade is contrary to the Brussels Agreement and the 2023 Ohrid Annex, according to which Serbia will not oppose Kosovo’s membership in any international organization.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has also announced that he will travel to New York and that he also has a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on his agenda. /Koha
