For World Podcast Day (which was yesterday if I remember well) here is the analysis of the Italian market:
From 2018 to today, Podcast listeners have increased by 75%: this is what emerges from the search for Nielseniq for Audible
The photograph taken by the Nielseniq research reveals that in 2025 the Italians listen to more and more frequently. Looking at the duration, on average a listening session lasts over 28 minutes, 4 minutes more than last year. If you focus on the frequency instead, it emerges that listening takes place almost 9 times a month: the percentage of those who consider the podcast is also growing a weekly appointment (62%), while for 16% it is a daily habit. The assiduous listeners are mainly men, between 25 and 34 years old and equally distributed throughout the country.
When you have to decide whether to press play or not, some elements are decisive: the theme (80%), the genre (69%) and the narrator (58%). The main listening levers are the deepening of a specific topic together with the desire to inquire (46%) and curiosity towards new content (40%). Also for this reason, podcasts are considered a valid support to students to deepen study issues (53%). The ranking of favorite genres in 2025 sees Crime (41%) in the first place followed by those of history and politics (39%), wellness (33%) and fiction (24%). Among the formats, the in -depth podcasts (47%), information (42%) and inquiry (40%) stand out then followed by those of entertainment (32%). 97% listen mainly to Italian (while 65% listen only to Italian); The percentage (32%) of those who listen to English rises. The research also reveals an interest in book spin-offs, television and theatrical shows, films or graphic novels that if transformed into podcasts are appreciated by 16% of the sample. The favorite protagonists for these new collateral adventures are the main characters, appreciated by 55% of the interviewees. However, a good 45% are not afraid to innovate and would gladly follow the adventures of the secondary characters.
Favorite listening is what you do at home (73%) and during movements (62%), especially in the car (37%), walking on the street (28%) and public transport. In daily frenzy, the best moments for podcasts are when you come back from work, on the weekend and before sleeping.

I have to say that I live listening to Podcast and in the last 9 years I have passed 1 year and a half uninterruptedly To hear Podcast and I never heard any of those 10 = D in the sense that I just have never heard them name.

Quello dei podcast è un trend che non ho mai capito e che anzi mi infastidisce quasi. Se devo ascoltare qualcosa ascolto della musica. Se voglio informarmi leggo. Ma ehi, un limite mio, lo ammetto.
Non capirò mai l’ossessione della gente con il crime.
Non ci sono già abbastanza cose negative che uno deve anche ascoltare volontariamente storie orrende?

Chiaramente podcast e streaming galoppano perché ascoltare quello che vuoi, quando vuoi batte sempre il broadcast delle emittenti che equivale ad ascoltare quello che forse vuoi, quando non puoi.

Sì ma è Audible, non so quanto sia in rapporto agli altri, ma sono relativamente sicuro che è un campione mooolto ristretto e settoriale. Sarebbe interessante rapportarlo anche a quelli su youtube per esempio, come BSMT o Tintoria.
Per me il podcast ha quasi interamente soppiantato la musica in auto o in treno quando sono solo nonostante ascolti un tipo solo molto specifico di podcast (podcast storici narrativi a puntate in inglese, idealmente narrati con voce abbastanza monotona).
Vogliamo finalmente dire la verità sul true crime? È un genere che non dovrebbe esistere, è estremamente dannoso per la criminologia vera e le scienze forensi. Ormai in questo paese sono tutti criminologi, con un’idea distante dalla realtà riguardo che cosa sia effettivamente la criminologia. L’ossessione morbosa per il crime che c’è in questo paese (non solo eh) mi fa ribrezzo. Andate a parlare con chi si occupa di criminologia, quella vera, nelle università. Vi confermeranno ciò che dico.
