If you weren’t already won over by the title, the trailer for Lesbian Space Princess features a delightful mix of humor, romance, and just overall jolly vibes. The Pitt’s Shabana Azeez stars as the eponymous heroine on a quest to save her ex-girlfriend and take down the Straight White Maliens in this Australian animated sci-fi romcom.
In the United States, LGBTQ+ rights are under siege by political factions who see their very existence as somehow abhorrent, and their lives as less valuable than those of other groups. I won’t get into the extent of the political machine here, but let’s just say that renaming the USS Harvey Milk in an effort to erase the history of the civil rights leader and military veteran Harvel Milk is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to government attacks on the queer community.
Back in the day, the mantra of gay activists was, “We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it.” Movies like But I’m a Cheerleader and To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar, and TV shows like Will & Grace did a tremendous job in getting mainstream audiences to realize that the queer community was just as normal as any other community of people, just looking for love and trying to break even. Lesbian Space Princess is a friendly reminder that, when it comes to outer space animated comedy, gays have a place there, too.
Lesbian Space Princess won awards at the Adelaide Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, the Octopus Film Festival, and the Sydney Film Festival, among others. The film will release in theaters on October 31.
