For the first time in more than 10,000 years, authentic wild horses have returned to travel the Iberian highlands of the center of Spain. In 2023, Rewilding Spain introduced Przewalski horses (one of the last wild equine species that exist) in the forested region of Villanueva de Alcorón, with the aim of recovering ecological functions that the landscape had lost a long time ago.
These horses will help restore the balance of the ecosystem when graze on dense vegetation, reduce the risk of forest fires, create more diverse habitats and enrich soils. The project also represents a lighthouse for conservation, rural revitalization and nature -based tourism in an area known as the “empty Spain”, combining ecological restoration with new local economic opportunities.
