Built on hills and meadows in the subalpine valley in the Sierra Nevada, it’s easy to see why the “Switzerland of California” is one of America’s most beautiful mountain towns for fall foliage. Once the golden season sets in, June Lake, a small town in Mono County, transforms into a fall wonderland — all in the shadows of the Sierra Nevada, home of the innumerable natural wonders.

Of the many cutest towns in the Sierra Nevada mountains, June Lake especially stands out in the fall, as it strikes a balance of small-town warmth, surreal landscapes of the Sierra, crisp mountain air that sharpens the fall colors, and its uncrowded paths offer serene nature walks to enjoy the turning of the season.

But what makes it truly special is its dramatic alpine scenery that transforms into a patchwork of colors and contrast in the fall. June Lake’s landscape closely resembles the Swiss Alps, which earned the town its moniker, the “Switzerland of California.” Before you earmark a trip to June Lake, here’s what to know about this beautiful mountain town in the Sierra Nevada.

June Lake sits against the southern rim of the Mono Basin in Mono County, California. The towering granite peaks of the Sierra Nevada surround this 611-person lakeside town. It’s located along the scenic loop of California State Highway 158, also known as the June Lake Loop, which offers the best views of the town and the four alpine lakes: June Lake, Grant Lake, Gull Lake, and Silver Lake.

Unlike the other flashy towns in the Sierra Nevada, where their Main Streets are vibrant and active, June Lake is more intimate and makes you feel calmer and at home, making it the most underrated but scenic small town on the West Coast. Just like the Swiss Alps, June Lake is beautiful year-round, but the real magic comes out in the fall, when the landscapes orchestrate their most dramatic show of all seasons. The winding road feels surreal, with changing leaves, the reflections of color and contrast rippling across the shimmering lakes, and its alpine grandeur becoming warm and chill, as the early snow dusts the ridgeline of the Sierra.

Drive the June Lake Loop & Hike the Trails

There’s no better way to experience and witness the changing of the season than hiking the trails in June Lake and driving along the June Lake Loop.

    • June Lake Loop Trail: A 4.8-mile loop trail is a must-hike when visiting June Lake, as it boasts the best mountain vistas and gorgeous views of June and Gull Lake. There are steep climbs, particularly during the first mile, but they are manageable, and the views are rewarding when the trees change in contrast to the evergreens, creating stunning canopies of fall colors. You’ll also pass through the June Mountain Ski Area.
    • Horsetail Falls Trail: See the 270-foot waterfalls called Horsetail Falls, the largest in the June Lake Loop. It’s a challenging 4-mile trail that takes you to the iconic waterfalls with gorgeous views of the surrounding areas that turn into golden hues in the fall.
    • June Lake Loop: Officially known as California Highway 158, it’s a 16-mile scenic byway of U.S. Route 395, providing access to a ski resort, recreation areas, trailheads, and scenic spots in June Lake. When you drive along the June Lake Loop, the Eastern Sierra’s hidden gem, you’ll be rewarded with the stunning views of the alpine lakes and the surrounding Sierra Nevada, which transform into their autumnal beauty in the season. Keep your eyes on aspen groves, cottonwoods, and much more as they change colors, creating a mix of light and golden yellows along the road.

    Explore the Alpine Lakes

The four lakes are connected by Rush Creek, located in a glacial-carved, horseshoe-shaped canyon in a looped valley, where the town of June Lake is located, right at the base of the 10,908-foot Carson Peak of the Sierra Nevada.

    • June Lake: The namesake of the town, June Lake, is located within the Inyo National Forest and is well-stocked with trout. So, if you love fishing, the lake fits the bill. The 320-acre lake has two marinas: the June Lake Marina and Big Rock Resort.
    • Silver Lake: You’ll find it at the base of Carson Mountain. It’s home to the oldest “fishing retreat” in the region: the Silver Lake Resort, which opened in 1916. The lake spans 110 acres, making it ideal for kayaking, boating, swimming, and shore fishing. The lake also has a very healthy trout population.
    • Grant Lake: It covers 1,100 acres and is the largest of all four lakes in the June Lake Loop, but it’s easily overlooked. Unsuspecting travelers would often miss this man-made lake, but it’s a great spot for motorized watersports like wakeboarding, water skiing, and jet skiing. Barbecues on the shore are perfect in the fall, with views of Mount Wood of the Sierra. Grant Lake is a bit sparse of trees, but if you look closely, you’ll see the changing colors on the hillside.
    • Gull Lake: It’s the smallest of the four lakes in the loop, covering only 60 acres, but it’s what makes it special. It’s easily accessible from the June Lake Loop Road or downtown June Lake, and offers the best views of the Swiss Alps of the Sierra. It’s also a great spot for picnics and fishing, and is home to the Gull Lake Marina.

The view of June Lake from Oh! Ridge Campground is not to be missed. If you love photography, this is the perfect time to capture June Lake, surrounded by sweeping views of Carson Peak and fall colors.

Take in Local Food, Culture, & Festivals

Feel the warm presence of June Lake by exploring the town’s main thoroughfare, or the June Lake Loop Road, where you can find several locally owned and operated restaurants, serving comfort local food to enjoy after a day of exploring the town. June Lake Brewing, the only brewery in June Lake, is a great spot to grab a pint.

June Lake also hosts several fall events and festivals, such as Leaves in the Loop (BetweenOctober 10 and 12, 2025, in Gull Lake Park) and the June Lake Autumn Beer Festival in September. These local events invite travelers and locals alike to experience the best of fall foliage in the Eastern Sierra Nevada — all with live music, arts and crafts, food, and much more.

The Perfect Time To Visit June Lake In The Fall

California isn’t renowned for its fall colors, but the Eastern Sierra Nevada champions it. Plan your visit to June Lake in the fall sometime between late September and mid-October. In late September, you’ll see the earliest colors of changing leaves, which is a great time to see the landscape in contrast with the evergreens.

In mid-October, the colors are at their peak, with aspen groves bursting out in different shades of gold, alongside maples, willows, cottonwoods, and many more. However, be sure to time your trip carefully, as the peak colors only last for about two weeks, or even shorter if strong winds prevail. However, as the Eastern Sierra experiences cold temperatures during the shift in seasons, it’s what makes it a perfect spot for fall foliage.

June Lake, known as the “Switzerland of California,” is a small, picturesque mountain town where shimmering lakes and the Sierra Nevada mountains converge to create a stunning landscape of colors during the golden season. Its Swiss Alps-like landscape makes for a stunning fall foliage postcard!
