High levels of the pesticide methomyl, which is harmful to humans, have been found in red peppers produced in North Macedonia, the European Food Safety System (RASFF) announced, regional media reported.

According to the official announcement of this organization, in peppers imported to Croatia from Macedonia, after a market control, a percentage of 0.049 mg of methomyl per kilogram was found.

The permitted percentage of methomyl is 0.01 mg/kg, and since the level found was five times higher, the products were ordered to be withdrawn from the European Union market.

The market inspection was conducted on September 23, while the official announcement was published on October 3.

Methomyl is a carbamate insecticide introduced in 1966 and is known for its high toxicity to humans and animals.
