I was at McDonalds on Sunday and I noticed something that made me think about. Many tables were left full of trash after people finished eating. Cups wrappers bags tissues everything was just left there. Nobody cleaned up after themselves. It made me wonder if people think cleaning up is only the job of the staff or if we have started to ignore basic shared responsibility in public places.

I also noticed that some people ordered their food as takeaway which has 15 percent VAT but still sat down and ate inside although dine in should be 25 percent VAT. After eating they left all the rubbish on the table and walked away. This is not only about tax rules being ignored. It also shows a problem of responsibility and attitude.

So I am genuinely curious

1. After eating should people throw away their own trash in a fast food restaurant. In Norway is this considered basic manners or do most people believe it is the job of the employees
2. Is this becoming a normal thing. Is it only young people or is this happening across different age groups
3. Norway talks a lot about respect for nature and keeping the environment clean. So why is this attitude not the same when it comes to indoor public spaces. Is this an issue related to education habits or system design?

If people stop taking responsibility for simple things like cleaning up after themselves what does that say about the direction of our society?

  1. Some people suck, most people don’t. The people who leave thrash in a McDonalds is obviously in the first category, and I would wager a larger % of trashy people go there since it’s fast food.

It is not seen as a decent thing to do, but some people don’t care and behave badly towards service employees.

Lastly, I wouldn’t take a few people behaving badly to reflect anything upon a society as a whole. People still left thrash 50 years ago, and they will still do it in 50 years. Commonly these places are understaffed basically all the time, and they don’t have the time to clean it up as fast as it sometimes are done other places.

  2. I was a little bit angry as I noticed how high the prices for fastfood or the cinema meanwhile are. But then I noticed this behaviour of people like in your pictures and now I know that we are paying a cleaning fee for this people. That makes me really sad

  3. In principle people should clean up after them self.

The only reason why I think the staff should clear away the trash is that the table will also need cleaning, and thrash is a good indication to staff that this table also needs to be cleaned.

I feel that I would rather clear the table myself if I was also getting something to clean the table, rather than taking away my own trash and leaving soda spills and ketchup for the next guest to discover for them self.

  4. There is a substantial amount of narcissism that permeates the youth of this country (a common occurence everywhere in the Global North, but here it feel more pronounced, more visible with the naked eye). Blame gentle parenting if you wish

  5. I’ll be honest and state that I don’t leave it.

But McDonald’s advertises itself as a restaurant. They can’t complain.
