Mikel Merino’s magnificent scoring record in 2025 continued against Bulgaria as the Arsenal forward netted a brace for Spain.

The 29-year-old has now scored 18 goals in this calendar year after finding the back of the net twice in Spain’s 4-0 win in World Cup qualifying against Bulgaria.

Despite question marks over where he fits into Mikel Arteta’s team, the Arsenal attacker’s goalscoring record cannot be argued with.

Merino was not the only player who impressed on the night, with Martin Zubimendi also producing a strong display for La Roja.

Mikel Merino is actually becoming a key player for Luis de la Fuente’s team, having now scored six goals in four World Cup qualifying matches.

The midfielder has contributed to almost 50 per cent of Spain’s goals in the World Cup Qualifiers so far, which is higher than any other player.

For his first goal, Merino found himself in a great position and headed home with an impressive header from Robin Le Normand’s flick on. His second goal was also another header, as he towered over the Bulgarian defence.

Recently, the former Newcastle United star netted against his old team as he helped the Gunners to come from behind to win away at St James’ Park.

After coming off the bench, Bukayo Saka hailed Merino for his goal against Newcastle and recognised his threat in front of goal.

Arteta also recognised Merino’s performance against Newcastle as he continues to prove why he remains such a key player for the North London club.

Martin Zubimendi also impresses for Spain

Zubimendi also impressed once again for Spain, with a very solid performance at the base of Spain’s midfield alongside Merino.

Arteta will be delighted that he was subbed off just after the hour mark in the win in Elche, as he was replaced by Aleix Garcia.

Despite only playing 63 minutes, the new Arsenal signing still managed 90 touches of the ball and also completed 81 of his 82 passes.

Martin Odegaard has been impressed by Zubimendi so far at Arsenal, and in Spain’s win over Bulgaria, he once again highlighted his importance.
