LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – A week traveling through Spain while taking a summer course? Most students would say, “Sign me up!”

Melissa Ramirez, director of guidance and counseling for United ISD, shared details about the district’s study abroad program in Salamanca, Spain, set for June 6–20, 2026.

Although the initiative launched last year, Ramirez said the first trip was a success, with 16 students from each high school taking part.

“They had a wonderful time, and it was a great experience, and you know what, it sets them apart from everyone else,” Ramirez said, adding that the program helps students stand out for scholarships and college applications.

The curriculum includes Spanish language, culture, and speech courses. Students will learn under professors from La Universidad de Salamanca, exploring the city’s parks, monuments, churches, and museums as part of an immersive classroom experience. Participants will also enjoy the “whole university experience” by attending classes, staying in dorms, and meeting university students, according to the program’s description.

Applications for interested 11th graders are due Oct. 17, 2025. Students can apply using the QR code on the flyer or by contacting the UISD Guidance and Counseling Department at (956) 473-5248 for more information.
