John Hopkins researchers say mysterious glow discovered in the middle of our galaxy could be the result of colliding pieces of dark matter

This is a horrible article. The gamma-ray signal measured by Fermi-LAT is not new. The suggestion that it might be emitted by dark matter is not new. The fact that it’s more likely to be emitted by pulsars is also not new.

What’s new is that Silk et al. computed the shape of the emission produced by millisecond pulsars and by dark matter in a few galactic models. They show that in theory, you could tell whether the emission looks more like that or like dark matter. Current data *cannot discriminate between pulsars and dark matter* (or some other hypothetical source we haven’t considered).

It should be noted that this group of authors is hugely biased and has been flogging this as dark matter for a while. They’re really fishing for support for an unfavored hypothesis. This work does help support it, but that’s not really how you’re supposed to do science.
