Spain has officially been crowned the best country in the world for digital nomads in 2025, according to the Global Digital Nomad Report 2025 by Global Citizen Solutions – and honestly, it’s not hard to see why.

The study ranked 64 countries based on everything from visa options and tax benefits to quality of life and innovation, and Spain came out on top with an impressive score of 99.67 out of 100. The report confirms what remote workers have been saying for years: Spain isn’t just a place to visit – it’s a place to live, work, and feel at home.

Spain’s digital nomad revolution

Over the past few years, the idea of working from anywhere has gone from a niche lifestyle to a global movement. Since 2020, 91 per cent of all digital nomad visas worldwide have been launched, and Spain has quickly established itself as one of the most forward-thinking players in this new way of life.

When Spain introduced its Digital Nomad Visa in 2023, it opened the door for thousands of professionals from outside the EU to live and work here for up to five years. The programme offers one of the most appealing tax regimes in Europe, letting remote workers pay as little as 15 per cent tax on foreign income under what’s known as the ‘Beckham Law.’

Combine that with the Mediterranean sun, tapas, and an unbeatable quality of life, and it’s no surprise Spain has taken the global crown for 2025.

Why remote workers are choosing Spain

Ask any digital nomad why they chose Spain, and the answer is usually the same: it has everything you need to work comfortably and live beautifully.

From the beachfront coworking spaces in Barcelona to the creative buzz of Madrid or the slower pace of Valencia and Málaga, Spain offers a lifestyle that’s both inspiring and affordable.

Quality of life: Spain’s laid-back rhythm, incredible food, and affordable living costs make it easy to enjoy life while getting work done. Whether you’re taking a morning swim or grabbing tapas after work, balance isn’t just a dream here – it’s the norm.

Infrastructure and connectivity: Spain has some of Europe’s best infrastructure for remote work – fast Wi-Fi, a growing number of coworking hubs, and great travel connections to the rest of Europe and Africa.

Visa flexibility: The Digital Nomad Visa is open to most nationalities, allows family members to join, and even offers a pathway to permanent residency and citizenship – something rare among European countries.

Community: In cities like Barcelona, Madrid, and Las Palmas, nomad communities are thriving. From regular meetups to dedicated coworking spaces, Spain makes it easy to connect with like-minded people and build a sense of belonging.

Who else made the list?

Spain’s first-place finish puts it ahead of some serious competition. According to the report, the top 10 countries for digital nomads in 2025 are:

🇪🇸 Spain — 99.67
🇳🇱 Netherlands — 92.84
🇺🇾 Uruguay — 91.23
🇨🇦 Canada — 90.42
🇨🇿 Czechia — 90.17
🇵🇹 Portugal — 90.12
🇫🇷 France — 90.12
🇦🇪 UAE — 90.04
🇩🇪 Germany — 89.65
🇲🇹 Malta — 89.45

The report highlights how Europe continues to dominate the digital nomad scene, thanks to strong residency programmes, excellent healthcare, and high living standards. But it also notes that Latin America is catching up fast, with countries like Uruguay and Mexico offering appealing, affordable options for those chasing sun and simplicity.

More than a visa – a way of life

The study also reveals that the average digital nomad now earns around $124,000 a year, and more are choosing to stay longer in one place – a trend known as ‘slomading.’

Governments are starting to see digital nomads not just as travellers, but as valuable contributors – people who bring money, innovation, and skills wherever they go.

As Patricia Casaburi, CEO of Global Citizen Solutions, explained:

“Digital nomadism has become a strategic lever for talent attraction, innovation, and economic growth. The countries that embrace clarity, flexibility, and community integration will lead the future of work.”

And Spain seems to be doing exactly that. Whether it’s surfing in the Canary Islands, sipping vermouth in Madrid, or joining a creative hub in Barcelona, Spain has found the perfect formula for modern living – mixing work, warmth, and well-being like nowhere else.

For many, Spain isn’t just the No.1 destination for digital nomads – it’s a reminder that the good life doesn’t have to wait until retirement. You can live it now – laptop, sunshine, and all.
