Considering cities – let’s say more than 100.000 people (so paradise villages in Toscany do not count), then in my opinion, Bergen is number 01.

Lugano comes close, but Bergen on a sunny day wins.

What do you guys think? Which city could beat Bergen?

  1. So many cities are beautiful in its own way. What Bergen has in old wooden houses, fjords, mountains and nature, it lacks in historic grandeur from cities like Prague, Budapest and Salzburg.

When you ask here in the r/Norway sub, then everyone from Bergen would agree it’s the most beautiful city, while the rest of the country will say No out of spite or jealousy of course 😉

    “on a sunny day”
See, that’s where the problem is. It is never sunny.

More seriously though, out of the (admittedly few) “big” cities I have been to, Bergen might be the top one.
Lugano definitely looks great too, but I have never been there myself.

  3. No, sadly we have many recent ugly buildings and the cycling infrastructure is not the best (but not bad). It is, however, my absolute favourite city in the world.

  4. It’s definitely the most beautiful city I’ve visited. I used to think Edinburgh was, I love the stone buildings and parks but then visiting Bergen that was quickly overtaken. There are some beautiful cities in south Germany/north Switzerland too but Bergen is definitely the nicest I’ve been to. I like the size of it too, not overwhelming, but there’s plenty of culture, history, public space and amenities and you’re never too far from a hiking trail. I’ve been there twice now and can’t wait to go back again.

3 months out the year Norway is the most picturesque country in the world. Rest of the time it’s like hell has frozen over

  6. How do you measure it? A city like Rome has many places I find more impressive than any place in Bergen, but there are also a lot of not very beautiful places there.

  7. I didn‘t like it in November, but was Most beautiful in May especially with syttende mai around the corner 🥰

Curious about why you chose that picture to illustrate the alleged beauty,  it’s rather mundane, no? Nothing special one way or the other?
