Irondequoit, N.Y. — The West Irondequoit Central School District is the latest district to join Monroe County’s School Bus Safety Program.

The program provides districts with stop-arm cameras that capture violations when drivers illegally passed stopped school buses.

West Irondequoit joins East Irondequoit, Spencerport, Hilton, Webster and Greece in utilizing the program.

“It’s a district of neighborhood schools, we’re a community that’s a walking district, we have a lot of pedestrians on the road,” Superintendent Aaron Johnson said. “As (County Executive Adam Bello) said, I’m a parent here in the district as well. As we support our children getting on the bus, this is going to give us another layer of added safety and protection and confidence in making sure that our students are safe as they go to and from school.”

Monroe County said the program has issued 14,000 citations since its inception in October 2023, with 1,200 so far this school year. Violators face a $250 for their first offense, with penalties escalating for repeat violations.

The county said all of its suburban districts are eligible to join the program at no cost. The Rochester City School District has its own program.
