The 2025 PIC Coastal Classic began under calm skies and steady 8-knot breezes, right on cue for a classic Labour Weekend start. From Devonport Wharf, sails filled across the harbour as more than ninety boats eased off the line between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m., a mix of ocean-going racers, family cruisers, and first-timers all bound for Russell.
The start sequence ran smoothly, with Category 1A boats—the top monohull division—clearing North Head cleanly and heading past Rangitoto Island soon after. Within just seventeen minutes, Callisto had edged ahead of Mayhem, Wired, and Lucky, while Equilibrium and Duchess held close behind.

By the time the fleet reached Narrow Neck Beach, the boats in 1a and 1b are clustered tightly. From above, it looked more like a single super-fleet than separate divisions. Due to the staggered start times, it looks less like divisions and more like a single group.

Thistle’s cheerful start
Among the most spirited crews this year is SV Thistle, the lone starter in Category 8—a family-friendly division. They’ve made the start line a celebration, with a chef on board and breakfast served around 10:30. Between frying pans and foresails, they’re sharing videos and updates throughout the day, giving Boating New Zealand readers a taste of the Coastal from the inside.

Up the Gulf and onward
As the fleet funnels out into the Hauraki Gulf, the chase is already on. Conditions may be light, but with such tight margins across the divisions, tactics and timing will define the day. The battle for line honours will unfold over the next 12–20 hours, but for now, the sound of sails cracking and the smell of bacon from Thistle’s galley signal one thing: the Coastal is well underway.
