The HMS Illustrious Association held a reunion reception at the Verdi Hotel on Wednesday. It brought together association members from across the UK, alongside distinguished guests, including the Deputy High Commissioner for the UK, the mayor of Cospicua and several Maltese guests with personal and historical ties to HMS Illustrious.

In his welcome address, association president Vice Admiral Robert Cooling, RN spoke warmly of the enduring friendship between HMS Illustrious and the people of Malta, reflecting on the ship’s deep historical connection to the islands. He also extended his gratitude to the Royal British Legion (RBL) for their invaluable local support in making the reunion possible.

The RBL Malta Branch continues the legion’s long tradition of supporting veterans, ex-servicemen and their dependents in need while fostering strong links between the Maltese community and the British Armed Forces.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a specially designed white ensign to Cospicua mayor Marco Agius. The ensign was gifted in recognition of the remarkable efforts of Maltese dockyard workers who repaired HMS Illustrious during World War II, as well as the enduring spirit and support of the Maltese people.

The event celebrated shared history, friendship and the legacy of cooperation between the Royal Navy and Malta, a bond that continues to be remembered and honoured today.
