Spain is preparing for a week of intense rainfall as a polar jet stream makes its way across the country, bringing widespread downpours and stormy conditions to much of the Peninsula.

According to the European weather model, the associated fronts will bring rain to almost the entire country, with accumulated totals of between 50 and 150 litres per square metre expected in several regions before the end of the week.

Galicia, Andalucía and Extremadura among the most affected regions

Experts from Meteored explain that the Iberian Peninsula will see the highest precipitation anomalies in Europe, with rainfall well above the seasonal average, especially in western and southwestern areas.

Regions such as Galicia, Andalucía and Extremadura are likely to be hit hardest, where accumulations could range from 50 to 150 litres per square metre. In mountainous areas such as the Sierra de Gredos or Sierra Morena, rainfall could even reach 150 litres per square metre.

On the western coast of A Coruña and Pontevedra, very heavy rain is also expected, while in the Sierra de Gredos, totals could be 60 to 90 litres higher than usual, driven by humid south-westerly winds.

Significant rainfall expected in cities like Seville, Madrid and Barcelona

The bad weather won’t only affect rural areas. Cities such as Seville and Cádiz could see more than 70 litres per square metre, while Cáceres, Badajoz, Córdoba, Huelva and Tarragona may record around 40 to 50 litres.

Meanwhile, Madrid, Barcelona, Jaén and Ciudad Real could also receive more than 30 litres per square metre, according to the European model quoted by Meteored.

Atmospheric rivers and low-pressure systems to the south

Meteorologists attribute this wet spell to the current North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) pattern, which is pushing low-pressure systems further south than usual. This configuration is allowing atmospheric rivers loaded with moisture to enter Spain, generating persistent and widespread rainfall.

The fronts will mainly affect western and southwestern mountain areas, but the Mediterranean region may also see intermittent rain and localised storms.

Persistent rainfall expected throughout the week

Forecasts indicate that rain will continue all week, moving gradually from west to east. Although the impact will vary depending on the region, most of Spain will experience rain, particularly in the southwestern quadrant.

Authorities are advising residents to stay alert and follow official weather updates, especially in rural and mountain areas where flooding risks could increase due to heavy accumulations.
