When it comes to last-minute costume ideas, one woman in France has taken creativity to new heights. With just 24 hours before a party, 31-year-old Maïlys Lecaillier from Pas-de-Calais transformed everyday items into a hilariously lifelike ostrich costume that’s now delighting TikTok.

“Garbage bags, toilet paper, and hours of work for a ME-MO-RABLE result,” Lecaillier writes in her post, proudly sharing her creation with followers on her page (@lesmondesdemae).

Her video opens with the text overlay, “POV: You have 24h to find a costume for your costume party,” instantly setting the tone for the chaos and creativity that follows.

What started as a scramble to find something to wear quickly turned into a viral masterclass in DIY imagination. In the clip, Lecaillier cuts, tapes and shapes her materials until a wonderfully bonkers ostrich begins to take form — complete with flapping wings and a bobbing neck made from little more than determination and a sense of humor.

Once finished, the costume springs to life. The footage shows her “running amok” around her home and even “popping out a balloon as if laying an egg,” a scene so absurdly funny it could rival a sketch comedy routine.

Viewers were instantly charmed. “Absolutely the best costume I’ve ever seen,” one commenter wrote, while another gave her “10/10 for imagination, 10/10 for the interpretation, 10/10 for the funniness/humor.” Another fan added simply, “But it’s really well done.”

Lecaillier herself joined the conversation, responding with humor and humility. “The idea isn’t mine,” she admitted in one reply, “but I admit I’m delighted with the result!!” When a fan joked, “Do you do weddings?” she fired back playfully: “With pleasure!!”

For Lecaillier, the project may have started out of necessity, but it became something more. With only a day to prepare, she leaned on her ingenuity — and her recycling bin — to create a moment of pure fun that resonated far beyond her living room.
