    Place of birth question

    Hello!

    I’m actually building a family tree and I’ve found the attached residence permit from my great grandparents who arrived in Buenos Aires back in the beginning of 20th century, but I’m not able to understand the place of birth of both.
    It seems they have born in Galizia but not sure.
    Any hint will be appreciated!!

      This is a document from the Soviet Union, so it can’t be from before 1922. And Galicia wasn’t Soviet until WW2

      That’s Russian handwriting in Cyrylic alphabet, not many Poles can read it. Might want to try /r/translator/ or /r/russian

      If I’m reading the line right, it looks like Volhynia is listed as the region?

      Likely “д. Омеляны Волынской губернии”
      Which is Omelyany willage of the Volyn region from 1887. Which is Lutsk region of Ukraine now (but had different borders back then obviously)

      Unfortunately both of them fitting to be Volynian district of the Russian empire in 1885.

      This is a post WW2 Soviet Union residence permit document. The dates of birth are 1885 and 1887, the place of birth is Omelyany village of Volyn region ([that one that was in the Russian Empire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volhynia_Governorate)). It looks like this village doesn’t exist anymore or it has been renamed. The beggining of 20th century is very doubtful, because the document was issued on the basis of some government decree from 30.07.1945, so it was definetely issued **after** this date.

      To add to everything said by others, this doc doesn’t state nationality of the bearer too, which could be Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish, as the area was quite diverse, especially in 1887

      This is in old Russian cyrylic. You can try ChatGPT, I have found that it works quite well for my research and translation of old records. Another free tool that I recommend is transcribus for transcription of Russian cursive and then using ChatGPT or other translators to translate to your English. If this is a polish record, I would try to transcribe first and then translate to polish. From polish transcribe to your language 

      BTW I have some family that migrated to Argentina in previous generations, I will send you a message. Maybe you heard their names.

      It is quite possible that the name of the village is not specified accurately, or has an error, because there is a village called Omelne [https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omelne](https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omelne) , which was formed after World War II. The Volyn region currently has many abandoned or forgotten villages, and very often you come across identical, consonant or similar names.

      The post-war agreement between USSR and communist Poland to deport ethnic Ukrainians to USSR from Poland, and deport Poles living in Western Ukraine to Poland. Your grandfather was born in Volhyn, but the residence permit allowed him not to get USSR citizenship by force (and lose freedom of movement forever). Either he was an ethnic Pole or a Jew, those are two peoples who could reject USSR citizenship in occupied Western Ukraine. Since he for some reason voluntarily travelled to USSR I assume he wasn’t a Pole.

      Yes I have to agree. It does say Omelyany from Wołyń region. Can’t find this on a map though but your relatives are most probably from Wołyń area so either polish or Ukrainian origins.
      I’m polish and I speak both Russian and polish so if you need any help with translations/ reading you can ping me. I’ll help.
