Two explosions were reported near the embassy in the middle of the night on October 2nd, 2024.

Prosecutors said in a statement they believed that the two individuals, aged 18 and 20, had transported five hand grenades to the area near the embassy.

They had then thrown two of the hand grenades in the direction of the embassy, but they hit a nearby residential building and exploded, the statement added.

“It is our assessment that the accused threw the hand grenades with the intent to target the Israeli embassy, and that the attack on the embassy under the given circumstances must be considered an act of terrorism,” said prosecutor Lise-Lotte Nilas.

The two had been charged with “terrorism” and “attempted terrorism”, said the statement.

They would request a prison sentence and the accused would then be expelled from Denmark and barred from re-entering, it added.

A six-day trial has been scheduled, spread out between November 12th to February 3rd, said the statement.

The embassy attack came hours after the Israeli embassy in Stockholm, in neighbouring Sweden, had been hit by shots.

Several incidents apparently targeting Israeli interests in Sweden have been reported during Israel’s two-year assault on Gaza.

In February of 2024, police found a grenade in the Israeli embassy compound grounds, which the ambassador said was an attempted attack.

In May the same year, gunshots were fired outside the embassy, which prompted Sweden to boost security around Israeli interests and Jewish community institutions.
