The PN believes Malta must identify more sectors in which it can excel competitively at a European level, the party said in a statement.

“This forms part of the PN’s ongoing engagement through regular meetings with different organisations –  including the Association for Transport and Trailer Operators (ATTO). In this context, consultation can also be strengthened regarding upcoming EU Directives that will come into force in the months ahead and directly impact this sector.”

This was the message delivered by PN Leader Alex Borg as he led a PN delegation in a meeting with ATTO, during which discussions focused on the EU emissions system and the association’s concerns about how these measures could adversely affect islands such as Malta.

These concerns arise particularly due to the high costs associated with maritime logistics and transport. During the meeting, participants reiterated their appeal for the Maltese Government to secure derogations that could ease this burden.

Several other EU Directives that impact Malta’s logistics sector because of its island status were also discussed. In this regard, Alex Borg reaffirmed the PN’s commitment that under a future Nationalist Government, such matters will be addressed responsibly and in the best interests of all Maltese and Gozitans. It was also noted that while the volume of work to and from Malta has increased, the country’s infrastructure has remained unchanged.

Borg emphasised that the PN will do everything possible to safeguard this vital sector, including maintaining and strengthening the good relationship that already exists between both sides.

The ATTO delegation was led by Chairperson Joe Bugeja, while the PN Leader was accompanied by Shadow Minister for Transport, Agriculture and Fisheries Toni Bezzina, and Shadow Minister for Labour, the Maritime and Aviation Sectors Ivan Castillo.
