To be fair some of the bad traffic traits we have were taken from the UK such as excessive use of roundabouts 🙂 So American style planning might have worked better in Malta.

American style urban planning is horrible and famously heavily lobbied by car manufacturers. Private cars are the curse of cities.

  3. We do not even need to spend billions of our own money to build a metro. All is needed is to drastically reduce the number of private cars and instead increase the number of buses, minibuses and also cabs to a lesser extent. This would make getting from A to B much faster and cheaper for all.

Of course to reduce private cars to such an extent you need to tax them heavily. This will never happen because we are too short sighted and averse to using taxation as a tool.

Instead we do the opposite, we subsidise petrol heavily and then wonder why we are stuck in traffic.

  4. Malta should have a government mandate demanding companies to provide a waterproof reason as to why their employees can not work remotely. Can you imagine the morning commute without office employees who don’t actually need to be at their place of work?

Thank God I’ve been working remotely for years, but I have spent my fair share of time at the office. It was infuriating since communication is done via Slack/remote meetings anyways, so we were literally just a waste of space. And don’t even get me started on the mental health benefits of preventing the company I work for stealing 3-4 hours of my time each day just to get ready for the commute/the commute itself. And I also save an hour or so now that I get to do chores on my breaks, instead of just bothering my colleagues at the office.

Having government mandated remote work would also save hours of time from the people working in construction and such due to reduced traffic, and it would give people time and energy to consume, thus increasing tax yields.

There are literally no downsides to remote work, most people are much more productive working from home due to very few distractions, and they have a whole lot more energy due to sufficient sleep and hours of added free time

  5. I think that we should build the metro. The younger generation will adapt far more quickly. Eventually it would not be worthed to own a car because it will take you ages to find parking and if you find you would still need to walk.
