October is normally the lead-in for winter, with temperatures falling fast, but the month this year wasn’t the chilly span that it should have been.

Environment and Climate Change Canada took a look at the figures, with meteorologist Danielle Desjardin laying out the recent weather.

“Overall, across Saskatchewan, quite a warm October. So for Estevan, we ended up at a mean monthly temperature of 7.8 degrees, whereas the normal is 4.8, so that put it three degrees warmer than normal for October, and the 12th warmest October on record.”

Sometimes colder Octobers can mean snow falling, and while the southeast did see a couple of days with some frostier precipitation, we went into November with the ground clear of snow.

That doesn’t mean we missed out on precipitation as a whole, with Desjardins saying we again passed the seasonal average.

“Quite a bit of precipitation in October as well. The monthly normal is 29.2 millimetres, and Estevan received 39, so that was 134 per cent of the monthly average for October, and the 22nd wettest on record.”

That continues the trend of wetter fall weather, after September produced one of the wettest months compared to previous years.

Desjardins says now we can expect a warmer start to November, before colder temperatures plunge us below the freezing mark by the end of the week.
