While I understand that this is a tribunal that operates behind closed doors I cannot understand what benefits did Malta gain from this deal (fair value) if Steward did not abide by the agreement and left our hospitals in shambles. If our law courts were not justified in cancelling their contract, why did’nt the International Tribunal award the euro 100m compensation clause undertaken discreetly between Steward and Konrad Mizzi?

  1. Just go to St.Luke’s and see. One can make up bills as much as they like. 800+ million spent and barely anything to show for it. What did Steward even do? Say a pencil was worth 50 euro? St. Luke’s should be amazing with that kind of money.

This whole thing raises more questions than it answers. They didn’t even pay staff wages toward the end.

Just because you can bill for 800 million doesn’t mean we actually got 800 million’s worth of work. Feels like Steward was just trying to squeeze even more out of us and somehow they did, claiming they had another 4 million pending 👏

  2. Incredible that some people are celebrating this. My work takes me to St Lukes and its state is terrible. Also check with ex Steward Workers that left unwillingly due to lack of wages.

    Something is very fishy.

So despite the fact that they did not build or refurbish any of Malta’s three hospitals as contractually bound to do, the government still failed to win back anything of what the Maltese nation paid for. Moreover how can the ICC state that Malta received total benefits of €889,434,091!!!!!, while Steward Healthcare received €884,644,629, leaving a shortfall of €4.78 million owed to the company. Where did these benefits costed at €889,434,091 go, who were the beneficiaries? Surely not the Maltese citizens.

The government was obliged to terminate the concession following a Maltese court judgment that annulled the deal. It seems that the ICC justified this termination and everybody is in agreement that the termination of this concession was in Malta’s interest.
