The deployment sees FiberSense’s DigitalAsset detection and analytics platform integrated into Exa’s Italian network, marking a significant milestone in the operator’s strategy to apply automation and intelligence across its footprint.
The technology uses advanced vibration sensing and AI-powered analytics to turn buried fibre into a network-wide sensing system, alerting operations teams to activity such as construction work or environmental disturbances before services are affected.
Exa, which operates 166,000km of fibre across 37 countries, said the initiative reinforces its ongoing efforts to harden infrastructure against disruption as demand for bandwidth, route diversity and uptime grows across the region.
The company has been investing in tools and processes to increase visibility, accelerate threat response and reduce unplanned outages across its long-haul and metro footprint as digital infrastructure becomes ever more critical to enterprise and hyperscale customers.
“Protecting our network and ensuring service continuity for our customers is paramount,” said Ciaran Delaney, COO, Exa Infrastructure.
“By integrating FiberSense’s DigitalAsset technology, we gain a new layer of intelligence and situational awareness that lets us respond faster and prevent outages before they occur. This is another step forward in Exa’s commitment to delivering the most secure and reliable digital infrastructure in Europe.”
FiberSense’s monitoring service will operate 24/7 and provide real-time geolocation of detected risks, complementing Exa’s existing network operations and automated management systems. The partnership highlights industry-wide momentum behind live fibre sensing technologies as operators face increased threats from accidental cable strikes, construction activity and environmental impacts.
“We’re proud to partner with Exa Infrastructure to protect one of Europe’s most important network backbones,” said Dr Mark Englund, founder and CEO of FiberSense.
“Our DigitalAsset service brings a completely new level of intelligence to fibre networks, turning them into active digital sensors that help operators like EXA Infrastructure ensure their infrastructure is safer and more resilient.”
