Just wrapped up a 3-day/2-night fastpack of a section of the TRT last week. Building toward eventually completing the entire loop in one push. I covered roughly 19 miles per day for a total of 58.7 miles–absolutely incredible experience and quite the undertaking. Conditions were perfect and the scenery was stunning throughout.

Route: Started at Brockway Summit Trailhead (39.25851, -120.06443) and got picked up on Kingsbury Grade (38.97362, -119.89871). Stayed on the TRT for the most part, with a few detours for water access and side trips to peaks/viewpoints.

Key Gear:

  • KETL Mtn Blackwood Trail Run Shorts and NoFry Sun Hoodie – Lightweight, incredibly breathable sun protection that dries fast
  • Pa'lante v2 Pack – Perfect size and weight for a 3-day trip like this
  • Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z trekking poles – Light, durable, and collapse into thirds
  • Norda 01 Shoes – Ideal cushioning for long days with a bomber dyneema upper. Fit my feet well
  • Meal2Go bars – Excellent calorie-to-weight ratio. Easy to eat on the move
  • Smith Wildcat photochromic sunglasses – Versatile enough for all-day wear
  • Hydrapak Flux 1.5L with filter cap – Simple, reliable water filtration and carrying system

Sleep System: Kept it pretty minimal, brought a 20F quilt, lightweight inflatable pad, and a basic tarp shelter. Temps dropped into the low 40s at night but stayed comfortable. Typically stopped hiking around 7-8pm, set up camp quickly, and was back on trail by 6:30am after coffee and breakfast.

Highly recommend any section of this trail. Well-marked, easy to navigate, frequently has cell coverage, and plenty of water sources and road crossings if you need to bail.

Great choice on that section, plenty of bail-out points if needed and solid water access throughout.

This is definitely on my bucket list! Quick question, did you run into any bears out there lmfaoo? That’s honestly my main worry about fastpacking without a bear can

Congratulations on the hike! I thank God for keeping you safe out there. May I ask how you figured out which water sources are great to use? Thanks for sharing with us and God bless you!

  4. Clockwise crew! I did the same direction, nice to hit those primo views while you’ve still got fresh legs.
