MICHIGAN, USA — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed seven bipartisan bills aimed at protecting Michigan’s environment and supporting National Guard members, bringing her total signed legislation to 1,531 bills since taking office.
The legislation includes House Bill 4962, sponsored by Rep. Ron Robinson (R-Utica), which establishes a Michigan National Guard Member Benefit Fund to help servicemembers afford childcare, health care and tuition. The bill will not take effect immediately as tie-barred legislation has not yet passed.
House Bill 4392, sponsored by Rep. Ken Borton (R-Gaylord), allocates $41.8 million from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund for 85 projects statewide, including wildlife habitat protection, trail construction and park improvements.
Senate Bill 273, sponsored by Sen. Kevin Daley (R-Lum), extends water quality protection fees through fiscal year 2029, which were set to expire in 2025 and fund environmental programs run by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Senate Bill 577, sponsored by Sen. Sam Singh (D-East Lansing), extends the authority for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy to charge fees for training and certifying public water system operators, generating approximately $600,000 annually.
Another Singh-sponsored measure, Senate Bill 579, continues the collection of environmental permit fees for construction near water bodies, water discharge, hazardous waste handling and wastewater system certification, providing $7.6 million annually for environmental protection programs.
Senate Bill 574, also sponsored by Singh, amends tobacco settlement fund allocations to increase the Michigan Merit Award Trust Fund for scholarships and tuition assistance.
Senate Bill 565, sponsored by Sen. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing), allows unused money in the Local Government Reimbursement Fund to be transferred to the General Fund.
“Since I took office, I’ve been committed to protecting Michigan’s environment, ensuring generations of Michiganders can explore and enjoy all our state has to offer,” Gov. Whitmer said in part. “Together, let’s get it done.”
