NHS staff bearing brunt as ‘ugly’ racism of 70s and 80s returns, says Streeting

My dad was racially abused by a patient and family while he himself was a patient. Actually he was in neurological recovery after a brain tumour was removed. The day after his op he woke to hear the man in the bed after him calling him a white cunt. Accused him of being kaffir and all sorts of awful shit. When the man’s wife arrived she said loudly on arrival to her husband, ‘who gave you your bath? Was it the n*gg*r or the k*ke? ‘and talked to those nurses with undisguised hatred. It was fucking terrible. After I heard the man’s son’s saying more things about my dad, i told the matron and said I’m calling the police if something isn’t done.

The man’s family were in attendance (9 visitors at once despite limit of 2) and ignored visiting hours unless security physically moved them out.

The hospital fixed the problem fairly quickly by giving that man a private room so he and his family could be disgusting in private.

The staff were terrified to do anything despite being fully aware. They hadnt a clue. One of them told me this was pretty much a regular thing. This was about 8 years ago.

My personal view is that you should be treated by whoever is available to treat you when your presenting problem falls under the remit of the available clinicians’ expertise.

But I do think it’s a bit rich to say white people can’t desire to be treated by other white people of a similar culture, whereas the inverse is often actively encouraged.

One of the marketing strategies of DEI is to increase representation so ethnic minorities can be treated by someone of a similar background.

Race consciousness goes both ways. It’s either equally racist or perfectly acceptable, which is it.

When I worked in the NHS I can recall at least 5 instances of where I had racist abuse thrown my way by patients who were definitely compos mentis. Not sure if I can write out the exact words without my comment getting filtered but along the lines of patkey, mog, black cunt, whatever creative insult they came up with.

Every time it happened I removed them from my caseload and wrote up the comments in full, then transferred them to someone elses caseload if they were OK with it. If they weren’t then they went to my manager instead. Not dealing with that bullshit.
