TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – As the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in East Texas faced an unprecedented delay in their November payments, marking the first missed disbursement in 60 years, one local resident has stepped up to ensure families don’t go hungry this holiday season.
Lacy Warren, 25, affectionately known as “The Turkey Angel,” was moved to action by the financial strain on Tyler families.
“I just want to help take some of that load off of people, and also, nobody deserves to be hungry,” Warren said.
Warren has transformed her home into a community pantry, coordinating with volunteers to fulfill grocery lists for families in need. The initiative is deeply personal for her.
“I have been in a time like this in my life and I wish I had someone to help me the way I am helping people… so it is really personal to me,” Warren said.
So far, Warren and her team of volunteers have completed 47 grocery lists, with over 100 more still to go. Her goal is to complete the lists to alleviate the financial stress many are experiencing during the government shutdown and the holidays.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in East Texas faced an unprecedented delay in their November payments.
“The holidays are already so challenging trying to find enough finances to provide a good family Christmas and then imagining the extra weight of now having to put all of the funds into groceries, the funds that were originally for gifts, I can’t imagine the stress that some people are going through,” Warren said.
In addition to fulfilling individual grocery lists, Warren plans to assemble holiday meal kits, aiming to provide families with a stress-free opportunity to gather around the dinner table.
The “Turkey Angel” initiative is set to continue providing support through December, ensuring that more East Texans have access to food during this critical time.
