Greece’s national meteorological service (EMY) on Friday issued a severe weather warning for the next three days as a storm system moves in from Italy.
The system is expected to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms through Monday, mainly affecting western parts of the country.
Meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas said the areas most at risk include Epirus, western Central Greece, Ilia and Messinia in the Peloponnese, while eastern regions, the Aegean islands and Crete will be less affected. The heaviest rainfall is expected from Corfu island and the Epirus city of Ioannina, extending south to Patras, Pyrgos and Kalamata.
Rain and isolated storms will gradually spread eastward over the weekend, reaching Macedonia, Thrace and the northern Aegean by late Saturday. Other regions may see intermittent cloud and light rain, with reduced visibility early in the morning and at night.
Southerly winds of 4 to 6 Beaufort are forecast, occasionally stronger in the Ionian Sea, while temperatures will rise slightly, reaching 18 to 20 degrees Celsius in northern Greece and up to 24 degrees in southern islands. Conditions are expected to ease from late Monday.
