BERN (dpa-AFX) – Siemens Mobility has received a billion-dollar order from Switzerland. The company was awarded the contract for 116 double-decker trains, according to Swiss rail operator SBB. Ninety-five of these will be used on the Zurich S-Bahn from the 2030s onwards, with the rest going to western Switzerland.
According to SBB, the order has an investment volume of two billion Swiss francs (2.15 billion euros). “Siemens Mobility submitted the most advantageous bid in accordance with procurement law,” the railway company announced. SBB also secured an option for 84 additional vehicles, according to its own statements.
The trains are 150 meters long, have 540 seats, and offer more space for strollers, bicycles, luggage, and standing room than the previous trains. They can travel at a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour.
