It’s a charge intended to relieve congestion, not a charge intended to reduce emissions.

I’m more annoyed that we are still paying the dart charge.

Good.
Just because people have an electric car shouldn’t be permission for them to cause congestion. London has the most elaborate public transport system available in the country which everyone should be using and we need to discourage people from driving their own vehicles in London, whether it is electric or petrol.

Couple this with the increases in electricity costs, removal of subsidised parking costs & the government’s reduction in benefit in kind for EVs, this spells the beginning of the end sadly. I love my EV, but who can realistically justify paying 30% more on an electric car compared to it’s ICE equivalent?

Also even from a pollution and non-congestion stand point the tires themselves are still polluting.

Tbh, as someone from outside london, I wouldnt drive in the zone anyway

Well this seems economically backwards. Whilst we do not want congestion, we do want as many vehicles as possible moving about as we can! It’s not traffic, cars are the literal engines of the economy so their movement drives the entire country forward. Taxing moving vehicles is a tax on the natural human activity of driving economic growth. If they are electric and emissionless then I do not see the issue with them in urban environments unlike petrol.

People have to be forced off the roads. It’s not Texas. Our transportation system is inefficient to the point it hurts the economy and a major reason is the volume of traffic.
Yes, air quality improvement was the major goal of the congestion charge, but we all know our roads and city centres aren’t designed for the high volumes of traffic they carry. We also need to replace tax revenue associated with oil with other sources of revenue.

Ha! All that marketing about saving money now they’re taxing electric cars

We’ve got away with it for free for long enough I suppose.
Did seem odd my wife could pootle into London in a massive BMW i7 for nil rate, just because it was leccy.

I thought we already did tbh. ULEZ is for emissions and the congestion zone is for relieving congestion, pretty self explanatory.

im happy to pay this charge as an EV owner. Im also happy to pay the extra tax for missing out on petrol tax. im still massively better off and personally I am really pleased not to be contributing to local pollution as asthma is a real issue in our family.
men who are triggered by EVs are so weird though. its a car that does car thing. if you can charge at home/work/etc then theres not many reason these days for not getting one.

Great news – luckily I have a multitude of cheap, reliable transport options to get me into London! (/s)

There’s no reason they shouldn’t pay.
