A forest fire has broken out in Tongariro National Park in New Zealand. On Saturday, 40 visitors were evacuated from the park, and on Sunday, November 9, another nine people. Local authorities regularly update information on the scale and progression of the blaze.

The Department of Conservation has closed the park. According to preliminary data, the area burned has grown from about 50 hectares at the start of the blaze to around 1,600 hectares; the causes of the fire are currently under investigation. Roads in the area continue to be closed to ensure safety and effective firefighting.

Rescue services are actively deploying helicopters and planes to drop water on the fire’s hotspots; the airspace above the fire and surrounding areas is temporarily closed to flights to avoid interference with aircraft.

Residents in nearby districts are advised to keep doors and windows tightly closed and to consider temporarily evacuating the fire zone to minimize exposure to smoke.

Official agencies continue coordinating actions among the police, the Department of Conservation, Civil Defence and local communities. There is also ongoing engagement with indigenous groups to enhance the effectiveness of the response.

Status and Future Actions

Units are currently continuing to look for ways to contain the fire using helicopters, planes and ground units; they await further official updates and guidance for residents. Monitoring of the situation continues, and the next steps depend on how events unfold and weather conditions.
