Considering Germans were under Moscow, and Stalin had a mental breakdown when hearing about the attack. Yes, soviets paid dearly for taking back their territory from germany
Nah, it did not. Stalin wanted to break it as much as Hitler did, it is just the Germans were first.
Politically – there was no backfire at all, after all Soviets helped defeat Germany and that was the image they got after the war. All the enabling they did pre-war (helping Germany re-arm and circumvent treaties, R-M pact, being co-aggressor that started WWII) – Soviet Union fell apart before it started to be a part of their image.
