I took a look through my Verizon FiOS text messages (Source) and realized I've been getting cooked like a frog.

The cost of internet has increase over 63% in the past three years.

I used Excel Spreadsheet (Tool) for the visualization.

Edit: its 60% increase. I cant math this AM.

  1. Many fiber internet companies offer a life lock price. That’s something that you may want to look into if Verizon isnt the only gigbit company in your area. A 63% increase over 3 years is a Comcast level of fuckery that makes me glad I switched to a local internet company that will not increase the price provided that I don’t change services or move.

  2. I got locked into 1 Gbps Fios for 5 years (signed up 2 years ago) for $45. Definitely worth calling and seeing what they can do

  3. Wait, why is it going up? Shouldn’t it be getting cheaper? It’s getting cheaper in my country

  4. Weird how once the infrastructure is already in place and the network is reduced to maintenance costs, prices rise anyways

Cable companies always play a game of offering a great introductory rate and then jumping it up when that rate is over.

It sucks when you only have one wired ISP to choose from.

  6. Let’s be real, no one is actually getting a 1 Gbps connection. You pay for that, but they only have to provide you UP TO 1 Gbps.

But the fact that technology services are getting more expensive instead of less expensive is because we have essentially monopoly conditions for Internet service in the US.

Most Americans have a *SINGLE* choice for high speed internet. There is no competition.

A boss of mine just complained about paying $350 a month for their TV/Internet package. In this case, it’s definitely extorting the elderly as she’s peaking at 90 years old and lives by herself.

I can’t get anything quicker than about 75 Mbps. I pay $100 lol. Manitoba fuckin sux like that.

Mine just jumped up but I contacted support and got them to lower my bill by $15 plus increase my speeds.

  10. This is why you need a regulator to manage monopolies.

They shouldn’t be able to set prices if they are a monopoly in an area providing an essential service like internet access, nor should they be allowed to increase prices by more than CPI.

$80 for 5 gbps! Ziply fiber. Way too much spread but it was cheaper than doing less lol.

I pay $84 per month for 600 meg cable… that went from like $45 to $84 in the same time frame as yours. I would love to have 1 Gb fiber for $79%.

  13. 1Gb fibre is €30.99 in france, they’re apparently trying to upgrade everyone to 7Gb soonish

  14. Crazy costs.
Here in Poland, costs are rising too, but the price for 1gbps fiber is about 65zł (18 USD)

  15. My att fiber just went up in price for no reason whatsoever. No change in speed, no better service, nothing. Just a email that at the end on the year the price goes up $5 a month. Only option is Comcast so I guess they know it’s worth the extra to never go back to them.

Maybe I’m wrong but wouldn’t you expect this to get cheaper as bandwidth increases and fiber is more adopted?

  17. Big Co squeezing every dollar they can. Not that it helps you,but getting into a city or town that provides municipal high speed internet seems to be the way to go

  18. I use metronet in an Indianapolis suburb. When I first signed up it was $90 for 1gb fiber. Now it’s $90 for 2gb fiber. I like my inflation experience better.

  19. In Portugal, since the introduction of a super low cost company last year, you can get 1GBPS speed for 10/15€, instead of double or triple the amount

Internet prices run on a bargaining system. You need to call and negotiate the rate down every time they raise it, and threaten to leave for another option.

If you don’t have other traditional ISPs in your area, threaten to switch to Starlink or a 5G router. Those are available almost everywhere, so you always have leverage.
