Dario Gjergja has officially been appointed as the head coach of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

This is something that had been discussed for quite some time, and today it was confirmed on the official website of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Bosnia and Herzegovina had been searching for a new head coach for some time after Adis Beciragic, who led the team to a historic achievement at this year’s EuroBasket by reaching the Round of 16, resigned from the position.

The Belgian coach of Croatian origin built his reputation in Belgium, where he served as head coach of Liege (2009–2011) and then led Oostende for a full 14 years. What’s interesting is that he won the championship every single time with Oostende. This summer, Dario Gjergja left Belgium and became the head coach of Limoges.

His success in Oostende earned him the position of head coach of the Belgian national team, where he achieved some historic results, including reaching the knockout stage of EuroBasket 2022, where Belgium was eliminated by Slovenia in the Round of 16.

In the past, specifically in 2023, Gjergja was also mentioned as a candidate for the head coach position of the Croatian national team. Former president of the Croatian Basketball Federation, Aleksandar Petrovic, publicly stated that an agreement with Gjergja fell through at the last moment and that he could no longer be considered for the position in the future. At that time, Josip Sesar was appointed as Croatia’s head coach.

Dario Gjergja will have his first duties as head coach of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team at the end of November, when his team will face Turkey and Serbia in the 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
