Congressman Robert Aderholt celebrated the grand opening of the Defense Munitions Proving Ground (DMPG) in Walker County, highlighting its significance for both national defense and local economic growth.
“DMPG is a powerful example of growth and innovation,” Aderholt said, emphasizing the collaboration between Congress, the Department of War, industry, and the local community.
The facility, located on a reclaimed coal mine in Townley, has undergone significant expansion since its groundbreaking last August. It now includes a 15,000-square-foot Range Control building, a second warhead test arena, a Rocket on a Rope test area, and an additional 700 acres. This development marks a major advancement for the defense industry and Walker County.
DMPG will support Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville by reducing the backlog for missile and munitions testing, thereby enhancing readiness in North Alabama. Aderholt noted the facility’s impact on local opportunities, stating, “Over the past year, construction on this site has supported local jobs and boosted the Walker County economy.” With DMPG hiring its first full-time Walker County employee, Aderholt sees the beginning of long-term job creation in the area.
“This is a win not just for DMPG, but for all of Walker County and the entire state of Alabama,” Aderholt said, underscoring the facility’s role in strengthening national defense and investing in Alabama’s future.
