OK so when he paid for the insurance, was he told there was a max value of £750? Cause if so, fully on him.

Special delivery is pretty much the RM flagship service, once that reputation goes they’re really no different than any unreliable courier company, but you can’t track them in real time unlike some of those couriers. I would have probably driven that gold to Wales.

Royal Mail royally fucked a laptop I shipped to an employee, in its original box, and insured up to the full value of the laptop. Sent via Special Delivery.
It arrived with the corner of the box stoved in and the laptop corner folded in on itself.
Opened what I thought was a relatively simple claim, had the postage refunded, but no compensation for the damaged laptop.
Their argument?
“The boxes laptops are supplied in are not suited to the rigours of the postal system, they should have at least 2 inches of high density foam around them”, and then case closed. No interest in discussing further.
More than happy to take the money for insurance, then will weasel out any chance they get.

Yep says on their site:
“Includes up to £750 compensation for contents. Additional cover up to £2,500 available. Optional consequential loss cover available up to £10,000*”
Guy didn’t do his research before sending.

Is this an r/compoface? 10 grand in the post??? Honestly??? Mate 10k I’d be driving it myself. I’m still waiting for the 10 Scottish pounds my gran sent me for crimbo in 1987 to get here. This guy must be the most trusting guy ever bc I wouldn’t trust a bank with a 10k gold bar let alone RM… Some postie gonna be having a sick Christmas tho lol

Royal Mail didn’t lose it, it was stolen. Coins, gold etc are stolen all the time, sometimes the package turns up, but there’s a hole in it and the contents missing. The fact it can be ‘lost’ sending it special delivery means it should be easier to know where it went missing.

Wouldn’t trust Royal Mail with something worth £100, let alone a £10k gold bar! I used to think Royal Mail were one of the best, but seems since Covid they’ve totally gone to shit, worse than Evri or Yodel.
Tracked 48 might as well be renamed Tracked 96.
We’ve had Tracked 24 stuff show as out for delivery, when it’s been sent to delivery offices on the other side of the country, multiple times. No similar postcode and no similar street address.
We only seem to get letters delivered twice a week if we’re lucky, and there’s always loads of them when they do come, sometimes dates suggesting they were posted 2 weeks previously, e.g. “complete and return by 19th October” turning up on the 17th.
We’ve recently moved and constantly have post for the previous owners turning up, despite them having set up a redirection. We have also had stuff not intended for us redirected from our old address to our new address.
Useless.

The headline if it was non-inflammatory and truthful: Royal Mail offers man the entirety of the insurance claim he’s entitled to after he makes a mistake.
Royal Mail aren’t to blame here. They make it explicitly clear they’ll only ever insure up to £2500 and no more. The fact the customer has misunderstood that and made a fuss about it in the paper should not mean they change their rules to accommodate this once.

Got what he deserved, the Royal Mail isn’t for sending gold bars in the post, only a complete mentally defficient idiot would think it’s a wise choice.

Sold a webcam on eBay during Covid for £150. It got post in their system, showing as ‘being delivered’ for 3 months. Raised a claim, provided all evidence they required, screenshots etc. was insured up to £250. They sent me a pack of stamps and closed the claim. I complained and complained and they weren’t having none of it.

What exactly are they furious about, privatisation and capitalism?

Why on earth wouldn’t you put it on a courier, but £10k worth of gold is only about 100g so not very big or heavy.

I wouldn’t trust royal mail with anything but delivery of a letter or a low value item easily replaced.
