Two immigration waves altered the country's demographics significantly.
- The 1947 mass arrival of Indian refugees increased the Pakistani-Indian community's share from negligible to over 7%. The Punjabi share remained roughly the same due to a decline through partition massacres but an increase through a migration of East Punjabi Muslims.
- The 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan resulted in the displacement of mainly Afghan Pashtuns into Pakistan (as they lived along the border) increasing the Pashtun share. Pashtuns also have had the highest birth rate.

Sharing because this was a recent TIL for me, the country’s name “Pakistan” is an acronym:

Might be a dumb question but, why can’t we further segment the “Indian” ethnicities? (Excluding the fact that Pak’s govt probably doesn’t do this)
So 10% of Pakistanis are ethnically Indian? How did I not know that?
I was mind blown and curious a out Indians in Pakistan so I searched a Wikipedia ok them and all the “notable individuals” are Indian spies rofl

I assume that you mean the word India only indicates the country of “Republic of India” that began in 1947 (prior to this, most Pakistanis belonged to the British Indian Empire). Your data doesn’t differentiate the significant number of Punjabis moved from the Indian side of Punjab to the Pakistani side as opposed to those who were already there. Also, the Urdu speaking Pakistanis specifically moved to Pakistan to avoid being a part of the republic of India. They were never Indian citizens.
