Upon moving to Cyprus, I quickly learned that the potatoes are top notch. And I also discovered Jumbo chips, which are of high quality and quite affordable. I think there are other good, local brands as well.
How did Lay’s, the McDonald’s of potato chips, gain such a foothold? Every second periptero I enter will only have this crap …

Even a a mid potato is a good potato
I guess Lays (or as they were used to be called in the 90s, Corina) were around for much longer gaining a more loyal fan base.
Various reasons. The first one being that Lays used to go by a different name a couple of decades ago, amd they were the absolute best you could get in Cyprus.
Then you’ve got relative price, and also, different likings. There’s more options in taste with Lays.
Also, we are weird. Shark energy drink was far more popular in Cyprus than Red Bull (when I cared about such things. Don’t know the situation now)

Yes, a lot of junk/fast food is present in Cyprus. Moreover, there is a lot of ‘burger’ venues, which surprised me a lot, because ‘burger’ is the worst food serving I can imagine, and it is, basically, the mince meat sandwich, but overgrown in the wrong direction.

To be honest Laystin Cyprus taste better than abroad
Lays is owned by **PepsiCo** which is an american global food monopoly owned by blackrock, vanguard & blackstone. Capital builds capital so they’re probably doing something with their money investing it into maintaining their monopoly.
I’m here looking for best potato chips in Cyprus.
Just because we have good potatoes does’t mean we want or can run a snacks company at Lay’s scale
Jumbo is goated
Something I love about getting Lays here is that we often get flavours that the UK doesn’t (mostly special editions). Afaik, you can’t get oregano in the UK anymore as a staple flavour (like in Asda, Tesco, or corner shops) & the new Xmas editions of apple & caramel & glazed ham haven’t been spotted by my family yet.
My eldest daughter & fiance also both agree that many flavours taste better (Walkers Vs Lays), such as BBQ & prawn cocktail so there’s that, too
Isn’t Lays the most popular chips company across the globe?
Sometimes ads manage to brainwash people into thinking that what they advertise is a good product or they think that way because it is popular.
