On Monday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul urged Serbia to align its foreign and security policies with Russia to those of the European Union if it seeks to join the bloc.
Serbia, led by populist president Aleksandar Vucic, is attempting to balance its EU candidacy with traditional ties to Russia and China. However, its dependence on Russian energy complicates its position as the U.S. has sanctioned Russia-owned NIS, Serbia’s sole oil refiner, over the Ukraine war.
Wadephul emphasized the need for Serbia to support EU values, proving its commitment by aligning with the bloc’s foreign and security policies before joining the 27-nation EU.
