In the past asteroid impacts or volcanoes might have launched rocks containing moss spores into space. Some of the rocks might have impacted Mars. They should do experiments to see if the moss spores are able to handle longer stays in space.

To be clear, the moss wasn’t growing in space, it was dormant, but it didn’t die while exposed to space.
Surprisingly this sort of thing is more common than you’d think, as the ability to endure exposure to dehydrating environments also tends to provide resistance to vacuum and radiation.
