A list of some Thanksgiving food distribution events in D.C. and Maryland happening on Saturday.
WASHINGTON — Turkey drives and food distribution drives will fill the final weekend before Thanksgiving in the D.C. area.
In all likelihood, tens of thousands of turkeys will be given away for free locally. Included among the distributions is an event in Prince George’s County hosted by NBA legend Kevin Durant’s mother.
Below are some of the food drives happening in our area on Saturday.
Washington, D.C.:
University of the District of Columbia in Northwest
The event will be held at the UDC Student Center at 4200 Connecticut Ave., NW, with food deliveries going out from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Volunteers with UDC and Project Giveback will arrive on campus at 6 a.m. and begin cleaning up at 1 p.m. Organizers expect to deliver grocery baskets to 5,500 families in need across the DMV.
The Thanksgiving food distribution event has been taking place at UDC since 1995.
Maryland:
Eastover Shopping Center in Oxon Hill
Free hot meals for 600 families from 1 p.m. until supplies last. The shopping center is located at 5225 Indian Head Highway in Oxon Hill.
Prince George’s County Council Member Calvin Hawkins (at-large) will be hosting the distribution event.
First Baptist Church of Highland Park in Landover
Food distribution will begin at 9 a.m. and end when the food runs out, organizers said. Each vehicle is allowed to take one box of food.
First Baptist Church is located at 6801 Sheriff Road in Landover. Hawkins will be hosting the event alongside fellow Council Member Shayla Adams-Stafford (District 5).
Bishop McNamara High School/Mount Calvary Catholic Church in Forestville
The high school and church are located on 6800 Marlboro Pike in Forestville.
The event is sponsored by The Durant Family Charitable Foundation and organized by former NBA superstar Kevin Durant’s mother, Wanda Durant. Kevin Durant was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Prince George’s County.
Durant’s organization expects to deliver 1,500 turkeys and groceries to families in need.
Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Camp Springs (residents only)
Turkeys will be given out at Thurgood Marshall Middle School on 4909 Brinkley Road in Camp Springs between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The event will be hosted by Prince George’s County Council Chair Edward Burroughs and Maryland State Sen. C. Anthony Muse.
Those attending must be residents of District 8 and have a mailer in hand. According to the council chair, the first 1,000 families who arrive at tomorrow’s event with a mailer will get a turkey.
