KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A rule change that would’ve allowed NCAA student-athletes to legally bet on professional sports has been rescinded.

The NCAA announced Friday that the rule change will no longer go into effect.

“After a procedural 30-day period, two-thirds of Division I member schools have voted to rescind a previously approved rule change that would have allowed student-athletes and athletics department staff members to legally participate in sports betting on professional sports only,” the NCAA shared in a statement. “Because sports betting rules are common legislation, the ban on all forms of betting — for sports in which the NCAA sponsors a championship — will remain in place for all three NCAA divisions.”

The proposal was originally introduced in June and would’ve allowed players, staff and administrators to bet on professional sports. At the time of its approval by the NCAA’s Division I Administrative Committee, officials said “abstinence-only approaches to social challenges for college-aged individuals are often not as successful as approaches that focus on education about risks and open dialogue.”

The rule change needed approval from all three NCAA divisions and would’ve gone into effect Nov. 1 if approved.

Instead, the rules will remain the same as previously stated, with all sports betting viewed as illegal for any athletes, staff and coaches.
